| A little late, but that's why I'm the Eventualist. |
[03 Aug 2008|10:20pm] |
Amy and Justus came for a visit in March, only 4 short months ago. We went to Providence and NYC. I took about 300 photos. Here are the few I liked now that I'm done Photochopping them.

| That was a fun visit! |
[29 Mar 2008|12:08am] |
Had a great time in New York this week when my friends A & J came out to Boston to visit. We learned several new things. For example: hookers are plentiful at or around 39th Street and 4th Ave in Brooklyn. The Hotel there also rents rooms by the hour. We wanted to know neither of these things, but now that we do, we won't be going back to Brooklyn any time soon.
I'll email you guys later with a link to the photos.

Every so often I "discover" something that really surprises me in its pleasantness. It's never anything that you would think is particularly fascinating, but I find it to be - so I will share.
In FireFox, if you have multiple tabs open - and I always do - and you go to Tools -> Options you can chose to "Use Current Pages" as your home page.
Maybe you already knew this, and good for you if you did. (Why didn't you tell me?) But this means that I can just load the thing up with all my favorites and have instant data overload the next time I open my browser. This is good. I now have the power to open my 1 to 30 or so favorite web-sites at the click of one button and not have to remember to go to them.
Even more awesome. You can close all the "extra" tabs, then just click the home button to open up all your home tabs. I don't know when they started this feature, but I think it is my most favorite feature on the internet that I've seen in the past year.

+ = Diabetic Cat
Fat Cat had been losing weight for a while - which we thought was good. She was, after all, very very fat. Turns out it was for a bad reason. ( Poor fat cat has diabetes. )

| Unemployment Update |
[18 Jan 2007|02:04pm] |
A: Applying for unemployment is a pain in the ass. It is done, and I have reported for week 1. In another 3 weeks or so I get my first check. The system is odd and requires only 3 attempts/week at getting a job. An attempt can include applying for a job, attending a resume workshop, sending letters of inquiry and hundreds of other things that don't really mean applying for a job. So far I have submitted one resume, and have one interview scheduled. This is a much better percentage that I was doing last year at this time.
B: I have an interview tonight at 5:00pm. I responded to an add yesterday afternoon, and after a couple rounds of "Phone Tag" finally spoke with the owner of the firm this morning at 10:00am. He sounds nice - a little Type A overly thorough - we'll see tonight.
I suspect the job will pay less than what I was making up until this month. However, it is unlikely that anyone else will pay me as much. It was very much a gift that my most recent employer was willing to match my previous level of income. I'm expecting a 20% pay cut - which is still better than the 50% pay cut offered by the Unemployment Insurance people.

| My now former boss just doesn't get it. |
[08 Jan 2007|05:37pm] |
So Friday afternoon, I was about to go out to get some coffee with a coworker, Brian.
As I was headed out the door, Matt - one of the principals - asked if he could talk to me for a moment.
He explained that the firm was cutting back a bit and that it would be my last day. I wasn't too surprised, I have been doing BS internal work since the Duke project has mostly ended (Pay attention to that sentence).
So about 5 minutes into our discussion of it being my last day, and when I would come in to get my stuff (office fish tank, handing off an internal database thing I had been building, etc.) Bill, the firm's founder/owner walks in and starts covering the same territory. Matt says, "I was just explaining that we would like TODAY to be his last day." Bill says, "Ok, but we're going to need him to come back in to work on Duke when their revisions come in. He's the only one who knows what's going on with several key sections of it."
That's right, my FORMER boss wants me to come in and do work on a project because I'm essential to getting the work done. Just not essential enough to keep on for a couple more weeks. What an ass...
Of course, I am going to go in if they want me to (and I'm not working on something else, like a new job). I'll even try to get them to pay me. :) But I have to go in, beause I have to get a good recommendation. And the recommendation better rock!
Today I went in to pack up my shit, and break down my office fish tank (10 gallon tank with a black clown fish and a peppermint shrimp and some other things). I traded it all in to my favorite fish store for a red Montipora Capricornus (hard coral) of which I'm attaching a picture so you'll know what I'm talking about. I couldn't bring the fish home, as he wasn't compatible with any of the fish in my two home tanks.
Here's that picture. (The fish next to the coral is an Exquisite Fairy Wrasse - Cirrhilabrus exquisitus) The coral is about 5 inches across.

Oh, apparently there are so many people that were laid off last week, that the unemployment office for Massachusetts told me to call back wednesday (based on my social) and they have extended their hours.

| The Eventualist Update |
[05 Jan 2007|04:13pm] |
Christmas was good. I spent too much money, but who doesn't.
New Year's was ok, quiet. Stayed in and watched the DaVinci code, which was a lot less sucky than I had expected.
Work was going pretty crappy until I was laid off this afternoon. Now it's not going at all.
At least I get to sleep in on Weekdays for a couple weeks.
Turns out there were several people laid off today, not just me. Excellent!

| The Eventualist Update |
[31 Oct 2006|09:43am] |
I haven't journaled much this year, and it's mostly because I've been too busy, and don't have much to say. For those of you who are dying to know what's happening with the Eventualist, here's your fix.

| Bleck. |
[15 Oct 2006|04:10pm] |
Too much work.
I've spent about 12 hours working this weekend so far, and I'm still here, and I still have about 18 hours of homework to do. I'm quite possibly fucked. However, I've decided I'm leaving early from work tomorrow... say around 11:00am, and I'm not coming in on Tuesday.
Sweet!

| Vacation! |
[20 Aug 2006|05:26pm] |
This past week I went on vacation.
New York, NY - Aug. 12 and 13
1. Stayed at the W on Lexington - tiny room, cozy bed.
2. Went to the Central Park Zoo (thanks, Viv, for the inspiration).
3. Ate lunch at the Caliente Cab in Greenwich Village - $25 for two lunches and 4 margaritas. NY has some sort of crazy brunch war going on in which the food is about $10 and you get two free drinks with your meal. Flavored margaritas wer 75 cents extra - I recommend the pinapple, and for lunch the chicken mole (to DIE for!)
4. Lots of walking and looking around, and touristy stuff and dinner and breakfast, and another lunch at the Caliente Cab (corner of 7th Ave and Bleeker Street)
We drove there and back and it was easier and cheaper than taking a plane or the train.
Block Island, RI - Aug. 15-17
1. Boring
2. Food is decent, but not good, and mostly overpriced.
3. Beautiful
4. Bring your own groceries and some friends and rent a cottage. Someone bring a car to get around. It's too hilly for comfotable bike transport.
5. The weather was perfect, but I sunburned the backs of my knees.
6. If you've been to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket, you will be disappointed with Block Island.
Cape Cod, MA - Aug. 18 and 19
1. Stayed with Janet's parents.
2. Went on a seal cruise - not as many seals as last time, but a beautiful day and boat ride.
3. Ate lots of fish.
4. Nice wind-down to vacation.
Next week it's back to work and Sept. 6, school starts.
Did I mention I have a fish tank? Saltwater even.

| Excellent! |
[06 Apr 2006|08:48am] |
As you may know, Mac's now come with Intel processors. This means they can run Windows XP - natively. In the next release of OSX (Leopard) you will be able to install Win XP alongside Leopard and choose which to boot at startup. This should prove to be a boon for those of you with software for one but not the other.
Sweet.

| Things are going incredibly well. |
[27 Feb 2006|11:57am] |
Huzzah! Things are going great!
Here's some lovely prose from a recent junk email (I'll refrain from calling Spam, lest I raise the hunger of our beloved SaturatedX).
out her trembling hand, and touching Mr. Peggotty, as if there was attention to J. as being beautifully sleek.
D. fondled J. He doent know wheer hes going; he doent know -whats afore him; and drawing away her dress from the contamination of Emilys touch, and as they could be wished to be; and further mentioned that her I did not attend the funeral in character, if I may venture to say
To the page, sobbed Dora. Oh, you cruel fellow, to compare your formed. So far as it was developed, it had been my happiness to castle of my life; of all that remained - a ruined blank and waste,
Dick, his proposing Doctors Commons, his proposing Uriah, his considered more competent to the discussion of such questions;
Good. said Traddles, when this was brought. Now, Mr. Heep, you I felt, but I am sure I dont know why, that this was self-denying taking leave of one another, talking, laughing, crying, eating and many good things for which Peggotty was famous - and which was for disadvantageous.
When I had fixed these wretches in my mind, amends to me, even for the loss of my friend. The more I pitied nothing.
I told you she took everything, herself included, to a formed.
So far as it was developed, it had been my happiness to thee, Wilkins. I read the service over with a flat-candle on the thankless heart. I saw a double meaning, then, in Mr. Wickfields

So at my new job - going great by the way - we get an assload of Spam pretty much on a daily basis. The above was at the bottom of one such message today. Also I'm pre-approved for a $398,000 loan with monthly payments of $697 per month with NO credit check. I think I'll buy a small yacht.

| Unstoppable! |
[31 Jan 2006|10:08am] |
So, I got yet ANOTHER call for an interview this morning. I was out buying a T-Square when the call came in. I got to do something that I haven't done in a looooong time - I called the guy back, thanked him for his interest in me, and told him that I had already received an offer from another company. The best part - I got to wish HIM luck in his search for someone to fill the role (vs. My receiving the good-luck speech about 15 times through November and December).
If there is a god of employment, she is certainly smiling upon me this week.

| Job-having Update!!!!!!! |
[30 Jan 2006|06:27pm] |
Guess who got a call today with a job offer from the firm at which he really wants a job.
That's right, it was me.
Sweet!
I still have an interview tomorrow. But barring some sort of insanely wonderful offer, I'll be working at William Wilson Architects starting on Monday next week.
I told them I was definitely interested in their offer, but that I had an interview tomorrow that I had to go to. The interview tomorrow is at Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott. They are HUGE and are a great name. However, I suspect that the job at SBRA will pay about 30% less than the job I was offered today.
BTW, the job I was offered today is NOT an office lackey position, it's Production Coordinator. It would take a while to explain, so I'll save that for later.
So the reference check apparently went pretty well. I didn't suspect I would hear anything from them until the end of this week at the earliest. I guess they liked me, PLUS they are going to be paying me MORE than I was making at Block. Double Sweet! That's right, it's a raise, a promotion, and a new job all rolled into one.
Life is good today. Life is good.
Confidence Level = 15 (That's right Stronghold, it's off the freakin' dial!)

| Interview Update! |
[28 Jan 2006|07:08pm] |
Good News!
Both interviews on Thursday went great!
The first interview went well. The guy was nice, and the firm was nice. However, it's somewhat out of the way, and I couldn't get a handle on what the guy was looking for. I think he has three different jobs he wants to fill, but only enough money to pay for one of them.
The second interview ROCKED. I met with the Founder/Lead Principal, a Principal, and the office manager. The job rocked (it's NOT office lackey) and the guy who owns the place is pretty bad-ass. PLUS, I might not have to take much of a pay-cut, or a pay-cut at all. PLUS, I met with them thursday afternoon, and by 3:30 on Friday he had already called my main reference - they had a great conversation, and all looks well.
This is all great because I can go into Tuesday's interview and be truly self-confident instead of having to act like it.
Sweet!
Confidence level = 11!

| Additional Jobless Update! |
[25 Jan 2006|01:34pm] |
Yes, another interview. On Friday, I applied to a posting from Thursday and today they called to have me come in for an interview. Interview number 3 is on Tuesday at 2:00.
I'm bound to do incredibly well in at least one of them.

| Jobless Update!!! |
[24 Jan 2006|02:53pm] |
Well, two weeks ago a woman from a recruiting agency in Rhode Island called me (for those of you South - or near - the Mason-Dixon line, Rhode Island is a suburb of Boston, so it's not that crazy). Anyway, she had a great job she was calling me about. We talked, scheduled a phone meeting for later that day (weird) and the phone meeting went well - very well. The company she's recuiting for sounds great and they're in Downtown Boston with a great location.
She said she'd call me back early last week - Tuesday. Well, I didn't hear from her until today. She sent the co. 5 resumes or so, and they chose to meet with me and one other person. I'm scheduled for Thursday at 3:00pm. Now, I've just got to kick the other person's ass in the interview.
ON another NOTE:
Yesterday around 2:00pm I submitted my resume to another firm that's in Concord, MA - another suburb of Boston, only this one is where Henry David Thoreau wrote a commie manifesto while living as a hermit in the woods. Anyway, one of the pricipals of the firm wrote me back about an hour later asking me to call him. THAT IS CRAZY. No one is supposed to write back in an hour. I sure as hell didn't expect it, so I didn't bother checking my email until this morning.
HE actually wrote back twice! The second email was at 11:30 last night asking me to call him after 9:30am this morning. I called, he wasn't there, I left a voicemail, and since then I've heard nada.
There's a 90% chance of me having a real honest to god interview this week and hopefully the person interviewing me won't be insane like the last time I thought I had an interview.
Optimism is HIGH. Repeat: Optimisim is HIGH.
BREAKING NEWS!!!
The dude from the second company just called me back and we're meeting on Thursday morning at 10:00am. They provide free sodas, coffee, and other caffinated and sugary treats for free. So I'll at least get a free coffee out of the deal. Now I have to go make a portfolio. And work on a big, big sketch for this evening's class.
